Needle in the Hay

Your hand on his arm
Haystack charm around your neck
Strung out and thin
Calling some friend, trying to cash some check
He's acting dumb
That's what you've come to expect
Needle in the hay
~Elliott Smith "Needle in the Hay"

Fleet Foxes

Some pictures from the Fleet Fox show at The ULU in London on June 11th, 2008. I dug these out in prep for the upcoming Shepard's Bush show. The picture of the lead singer below is my favorite of the two I've posted but neither were great and required a lot of post work in Photoshop. (more on the photos after the jump). This was a great show by a band I had seen several times in Seattle as they were cutting their teeth at the local hot spots . They really set the tone of the night by coming out with an opening a cappella of Winter Hymns. The crowd hardly moved throughout the show. I see now why they are being hailed the next CSN&Y. Their earlier stuff seemed more Fleetwood Mac but I think some changes to the line up make the CSN&Y comparison much more obvious.

I shot everything on a 50mm 1.4 from the balcony. The first one of Robin turned out pretty good but blurry because of the low light. I had to bump the RAW image several exposures to bring him out in the extremely low light.

The whole band shot again was from the balcony but I think I fired the flash at full power for this one. The original image is below and was pretty bad. I made 3 versions of the RAW image in Photoshop to separate the band and the fans in the front. This also let me control the background and give some decent depth to the shot.

The original band shot from above. The Fleet Foxes were a little far away for the power of the D70s flash so I ended up lighting the front row of fans more than I would have liked. Again this took a little work in post but not bad for the little effort I put into the shots.
